Lightbulbs, Kombucha, & Sarah Chalke On 'Fake Doctors, Real Friends'

This episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends is chock-full of guests. First, Zach Braff and Donald Faison talk to the founder of GT’s Kombucha, GT Dave, to hear his amazing story of starting a kombucha company in the 1970s, when people would spit the drink out in his face, only to become the global leader in the kombucha industry and own 40% of the entire market. Then, Scrubs co-star Sarah Chalke joins them to ponder what Dr. Beardface’s job in the hospital was, tell the guys about her new Netflix project with Katherine Heigl, and burn a grilled cheese sandwich. And of course, they speak with a fan named Jamie from Texas all about their favorite movies for cinematography and to give him advice for parenting an eight-year-old. Plus, Beverly Hills Cop II (“I bet no one else has pointed out that both captains in Beverly Hills Cop are masterfully played,” Zach says), Gamestop stocks, and the famous Scrubs moment when Dr. Cox says, “Either this kid has a lightbulb up his butt, or his colon has a great idea.”

Zach and Donald adore GT’s Kombucha and find a way to bring it up at least once per episode, so it’s great to hear the truly inspiring story of GT putting the company together. He says his advice to anyone wanting to start a business is, “First of all, do what you love - but most importantly, do what makes the world a better place.” Then, Zach and their producer Dan explain the Gamestop short squeeze to Donald until Sarah arrives. She talks all about her new project, Firefly Lane, and how she had to face her biggest fear: Singing. There was a karaoke scene she agreed to do because they wanted her to rap an Eminem song, but they weren’t able to clear it, so she had to pick a “singing song” instead. Then they decided not to play the backing track while they filmed it, so the set was “totally silent except for my grating voice singing ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba,” she laughs.

Zach is confused about Dr. Beardface’s job, saying he pops up all over the hospital. He’s often in the pharmacist window, “so it’s like, is he a pharmacist? In which case, why is he anywhere else? Shouldn’t he be filling prescriptions?” Donald agrees: “Mick is a doctor. Snoop Dogg is an intern. What the f**k is Beardface?” Also, “What the f**k is the Janitor doing in the operating room?” Donald asks, and Zach can’t believe it either. “This guy is on all fours with his anus up in the air for all to see….Wouldn’t he be like, ‘Hey guys, get the f**king janitor out of here!’” he laughs. Plus, a lot of love for Mad Max: Fury Road, a surprising story about Matthew McConaughey’s parents, and Donald reveals his trick to winning negotiations with his eight-year-old; hear the whole hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
