Will Richardson, a guard who transferred to the University at Albany (UAlbany) from Fordham University, has been released from the UAlbany men's basketball program following an NCAA investigation. The school announced Tuesday (December 29) that the investigation raised concerns about Richardson's eligibility due to events that occurred before his enrollment at UAlbany.
Despite expectations for Richardson to be a significant contributor to the Great Danes this season, he never played a game for the team. UAlbany's athletic department stated that the decision to release Richardson was made after careful consideration of the information received from the NCAA. The university emphasized that they had no prior knowledge of the events leading to the eligibility issues.
Richardson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Teaneck, New Jersey, played 73 games over three seasons at Fordham before transferring to UAlbany. He left Fordham after participating in only eight games during the 2024-25 season, citing personal issues as the reason for his midseason departure.
UAlbany head coach Dwayne Killings praised Richardson's potential, stating that he believed Richardson could have been an all-league player or even a player of the year. However, Killings refrained from commenting further on the situation beyond the university's official statement.
The NCAA has not disclosed specific details about the investigation, and both Fordham and Richardson have not provided comments on the matter. The Times Union has requested copies of UAlbany's correspondence with the NCAA regarding Richardson's eligibility under New York’s Freedom of Information Law.
