Bogeys & Birdies & Bunkers, Oh My! The 2020 Genesis Open on Get A Grip

Genesis Invitational - Final Round

Sports broadcaster Shane Bacon and PGA Tour pro Max Homa host Get a Grip to give us an inside look into a stuffy sport with an eye to the lighter side. Not only do we get a real behind-the-scenes look at the game and the players’ techniques, the guys give us some good laughs as they make light of the players and the spectators alike. On this episode, they get into Max’s game at the recent Genesis Open at the Riviera, one of his favorite venues, discussing the course layout, the other players’ wins and losses, golf etiquette, Tiger Woods’ unbelievable cut streak, and so much more. Whether you’re hitting a birdie or a bogey – or you’re stuck in the bunker – these guys have your golf game covered.

When it comes to the Riviera, Max says, it’s almost more about beating the course itself than beating the other players: “It’s an unbeatable golf course...It’s so hard and demanding and punishing, so if you can control your golf ball for 72 holes...you are, in my opinion, a great golfer.” Shane watched the Open closely, of course, and thinks Max’s best moment was the birdie he hit on hole 15. “It felt like one of those putts that...makes a golf tournament seem interesting,” Max agrees, laughing. They also agree he “got plugged” at the 16th hole; “it was brutal!” Shane exclaims, and Max says that hole is “proof that you don’t need a 230 yard par three to be difficult.” But though he had some tough times on the course, he was very excited to see his best friend Taylor Gooch play really well. “The golf camaraderie is great,” he says. “We all want to beat each other’s brains out...it was a fun week.”

Since he’s “a media guy now,” Max has a lot of notes from the Open, sharing “the dumbest thing I heard all week,” as well as his favorite golfer to watch, and discusses some drama from the course about a woman who started heckling the players during one of his putts. They both geek out over Tiger’s cut streak, as well, pointing out that he had the greatest record in golf history with a streak of 142 until he missed one in 2005. Since then, however, Shane discovered that he’s up to a streak of 156; “that’s absurd,” Max chuckles. “I hit eight and I'm exhausted!”

Join Max and Shane for more golf greatness as they help us see the fun side to a game that’s conducted in reverent whispers, only on Get a Grip
